The Government of Alberta's Municipal Affairs ministry issued a notice dated March 2026 confirming that the 2025 editions of five CSA gas codes came into force in Alberta on March 1, 2026. The province's gas codes and standards page lists the same date. The headline item for boiler installers is CSA B149.1:25, the natural gas and propane installation code.
What came into force
The short answer: five 2025 gas codes, all on March 1, 2026, under the Gas Code Regulation.
The notice lists:
- CSA B149.1:25, the natural gas and propane installation code, which covers installing gas appliances and equipment downstream of the utility or the propane container's first-stage regulator
- CSA B149.2:25, propane storage and handling
- CSA B149.3:25, field approval of fuel-burning appliances and equipment
- CSA B149.5:25, propane fuel systems and containers on motor vehicles
- CSA/ANSI B149.6:25, biogas generation and utilization
These replace the 2020 editions. According to Alberta.ca, B149.1:20 was in force from February 1, 2021 to February 28, 2026.
Why March 1
Alberta's notice explains the timing. Since January 1, 2016, the Gas Code Regulation has allowed timely code adoption: national gas codes generally come into force one year after the month they're published, unless the Minister of Municipal Affairs prescribes otherwise. The 2025 codes were published in February 2025, so they came into force on March 1, 2026.
That predictable rule is useful for planning. When CSA publishes the next edition, an Alberta contractor can estimate the in-force date with reasonable confidence, while still checking the official notice.
The same automatic principle applies to pressure equipment, but there the minister intervened. As our story on ABSA's code list reports, Alberta declined to adopt CSA B51:24 and kept the 2019 boiler and pressure vessel code. Gas codes and boiler codes in Alberta therefore moved differently in the same year.
How Alberta's timing compares
| Jurisdiction | B149.1 2025 edition in force | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Alberta | March 1, 2026 | Municipal Affairs notice, March 2026 |
| Ontario | June 1, 2026, with Ontario amendments | TSSA FS-279-26, April 2, 2026 |
Ontario's version adds boiler-specific clauses, including heating-season CO checks on certain natural-draft boilers; see our report on FS-279-26. We have not reviewed Alberta's gas STANDATA for this story, so we don't describe any Alberta-specific variations.
Analysis: what Alberta boiler companies should do
This section is our analysis, not the Government of Alberta's.
Code editions change quietly. Homeowners never ask about them, but permit reviewers, commercial clients and new hires do.
- Train to the edition that applies. Make sure crews and apprentices know the 2025 edition has applied since March 1, 2026, and that older reference material is marked as superseded.
- Refresh your technical pages. If your website mentions "B149.1-20", it is now out of date. Updating it is a small signal of competence to commercial buyers who check.
- Explain, don't advise. A plain-language page saying which code applies and linking Alberta.ca helps customers. Leave interpretation to the authorities. Our Alberta page shows how we write these, and our boiler search service puts such pages where buyers find them.
What to watch next
Three follow-ups are worth tracking, and we'll report them when official documents appear:
- Alberta gas STANDATA. Alberta publishes interpretations and variances for gas separately from the code list. Any bulletin that touches boiler venting, combustion air or appliance approvals is relevant to hydronic installers.
- The next CSA cycle. Under Alberta's rule, the next B149 editions will follow the same one-year pattern unless the minister says otherwise. That gives training providers and employers a planning window.
- Field approvals. CSA B149.3:25 covers equipment that isn't certified to an approved standard, or whose certification was voided by modification. Commercial boiler plants with custom burners or controls are the usual cases, so contractors in that segment should check which edition their field approval work now follows.
For a boiler company owner, the practical question is simple: does everyone who quotes, installs or inspects gas work in your company know which edition they're working to? If the answer depends on who you ask, a short internal note is worth writing this week.

Frequently asked questions
When did CSA B149.1:25 take effect in Alberta?
The provincial notice and the Alberta.ca codes page both give March 1, 2026. The 2020 edition applied from February 1, 2021 to February 28, 2026.
Why did Alberta adopt it then?
Alberta's notice explains that, since 2016, national gas codes generally come into force one year after the month they are published, unless the minister sets another date. The 2025 codes were published in February 2025.
Is Alberta's timing the same as Ontario's?
No. Ontario adopted CSA B149.1-25 through TSSA's code adoption document effective June 1, 2026, with its own Ontario amendments.
