Boiler news and marketing in British Columbia

British Columbia regulates gas, boilers and pressure vessels through one authority, Technical Safety BC, and has enforced CSA B51:24 since the end of 2024. The coast and the interior are two different boiler markets.

Written by Ali Sedighi, MBALast updated:

British Columbia is the province where one regulator covers most of what a boiler company touches. Technical Safety BC handles gas, boilers, pressure vessels and refrigeration, and licenses gas contractors. The province moved to the 2024 boiler code at the end of 2024. Commercially, BC is really two boiler markets: the mild, wet southwest coast and the colder interior and north.

The BC boiler market and its buyers

The short answer: older homes and multi-unit buildings on the coast, long heating seasons inland.

In the Lower Mainland and on Vancouver Island, boiler work often means replacing hydronic systems in older detached houses, servicing radiant floors in newer custom homes, and maintaining central plants in apartment and strata buildings. In the Okanagan, the Kootenays and the north, the heating season is longer and colder, and no-heat calls carry more urgency.

According to Statistics Canada's 2023 survey, 42% of BC households relied on natural gas for primary heating and 36% on electricity. Boilers are a minority of systems, which makes clear, specific marketing more important: buyers looking for a boiler specialist want to see one, not a furnace company that also mentions boilers.

Regulators to know

We link these regulators; we don't interpret their rules.

  • Technical Safety BC for gas, boilers, pressure vessels and refrigeration, including contractor licensing. Its 2024 code adoption bulletin put CSA B51:24 into force on December 31, 2024.
  • WorkSafeBC for workplace health and safety.
  • SkilledTradesBC for apprenticeship and trade certification. Gasfitters are among the trades now under BC's Skilled Trades Certification.

Current programs relevant to boilers

As of October 2026, and to be confirmed with each administrator:

  • FortisBC Connect to Gas. FortisBC's program page lists $2,000 for an ENERGY STAR gas furnace or boiler and $2,800 for an ENERGY STAR combination boiler system, for new gas customers converting primary heat from oil or propane in existing homes. A $1,000 bonus requires a pre-qualification code before December 31, 2026, and installation by a gas contractor licensed with Technical Safety BC.
  • CleanBC Better Homes Energy Savings Program. The income-qualified program focuses on heat pumps and envelope upgrades. New requirements apply to invoices dated on or after July 6, 2026, and some rebates were removed. It matters to boiler companies mainly because customers will ask how it compares.

The local business mix

BC boiler work is spread across residential hydronic specialists, gas fitters who do boilers alongside furnaces and water heaters, and commercial mechanical contractors serving strata and institutional buildings. Strata councils and property managers are a distinct buyer group, with formal approval processes and a strong preference for documented maintenance.

How we'd approach marketing in BC

  1. Split coast and interior. Separate pages and ad campaigns for the Lower Mainland, the Island and the interior, with messaging matched to each climate.
  2. Speak to strata. A page for property managers explaining maintenance agreements and plant-room assessments.
  3. Keep program pages current. FortisBC and CleanBC terms changed in 2025 and 2026. A dated page beats a stale one. Our regulation content service does this.
  4. Build local proof. GasBoilers.ca, the division we built for CANRO Heat, reaches 26+ BC communities and is rated 5.0★ from 76+ Google reviews, a result from our boiler work in this province.

For federal efficiency rules affecting BC buyers, our sister newsroom HVACNews.ca has the details. Our newsroom covers code and safety changes, and our search visibility service is the usual starting point for BC boiler companies.

Seasonal rhythm in BC

On the coast, boiler demand rises gradually through the wet autumn and rarely spikes; maintenance and planned replacements dominate. In the interior and the north, the first cold snap brings a sharper rush of no-heat calls. Ad budgets and messages should follow those two curves separately.

We are a marketing and business consulting service for boiler and heating companies, not a contractor.
