Manitoba combines very long winters with a heating mix that's unusual for the Prairies: about a third of homes rely on electricity. Boilers, gas and oil burners are regulated through provincial inspection services, and the province was quick to adopt the 2024 boiler code. For boiler companies, that means a market where both gas-fired and electric boilers matter.
The Manitoba boiler market and its buyers
The short answer: Winnipeg dominates, the heating season is long, and electric boilers are part of the picture.
Statistics Canada's 2023 figures show 52% of Manitoba households heated primarily with natural gas and 33% with electricity. Winnipeg's older neighbourhoods contain many hydronic homes, and its apartment stock includes many central boiler plants. Brandon, Steinbach and Winkler have smaller markets served by local contractors.
The length of the heating season makes maintenance agreements especially valuable here. A homeowner whose boiler runs hard for most of the year is a good candidate for annual service.
Regulators to know
Linked for reference; we don't give compliance advice.
- The Office of the Fire Commissioner handles gas and oil burner permits and tradesperson licensing, and boilers, pressure vessels and refrigeration plants are inspected and certified through provincial technical services.
- Manitoba's bulletin ITS 25-002 adopted CSA B51:24 from January 1, 2025, with three clauses on design and impact testing left voluntary for now. Our Alberta story compares provinces.
- WCB Manitoba for workers' compensation, and Apprenticeship Manitoba for trade certification.
Current programs relevant to boilers
As of October 2026, and to be confirmed with Efficiency Manitoba:
- Affordable Home Energy Program. According to Efficiency Manitoba's program page, homes that qualify and currently rely on electric baseboards, an electric furnace or an electric boiler can receive an air-source or ground-source heat pump at no cost, fitted by one of the program's registered contractors. We haven't re-confirmed the eligibility details.
- Greener Homes Affordability delivery. Manitoba was the first province to sign a federal Canada Greener Homes Affordability agreement, in September 2025, delivered by Efficiency Manitoba for low- to median-income households.
- Federal oil-to-heat-pump grants closed to new applications on July 31, 2026.
Most of these programs centre on heat pumps rather than boilers. Boiler companies still need to understand them, because customers will compare options.
The local business mix
Winnipeg holds most of the province's boiler contractors and commercial mechanical firms. Outside the city, heating companies tend to be generalists covering furnaces, boilers and plumbing. Electric boiler service is a distinct niche that some contractors overlook.
How we'd approach marketing in Manitoba
- Cover both fuels. Pages for gas boilers and electric boilers, written for the homeowners who own each.
- Push maintenance agreements. With a long season, annual service is easy to justify. Make it prominent on the site.
- Explain the program landscape fairly. A dated page on Efficiency Manitoba programs, including what they don't cover, builds trust. Our regulation content service handles this.
- Focus Winnipeg search. Most boiler searches come from the city, so start there with our search visibility service.
Our newsroom reports when provincial rules or programs change.
Seasonal rhythm in Manitoba
Manitoba's heating season starts early and ends late, so boiler companies here have a longer selling window than most. A practical calendar:
- August and September: maintenance reminders to existing customers, and service pages refreshed.
- October and November: replacement campaigns, while homeowners still have time to plan.
- December to February: no-heat and emergency searches peak; ads should be ready to scale.
- March to May: follow-up on quotes deferred over winter.
The quiet months are short, which is all the more reason to plan content in advance rather than in the middle of a cold snap.
We are a marketing and business consulting service for boiler and heating companies, not a contractor.
